On June 10, 2008 members of Courthouse Rotary
Club in Virginia Beach (chartered June 12, 2008)
met in Wakefield to participate in the club’s
first service project. The event was the Muscular
Dystrophy Association’s summer camp held at the
4-H campground in Wakefield. 52 Hampton Roads
children attended the weeklong camp. Club members
provided a pizza dinner for the children and other
volunteers involved in the camp. Special thanks
to Dennis Free (club administrator) from the Virginia
Beach Sheriff’s office, for getting the club involved
with this camp. Additionally, Dennis worked with
Aramark Corp. to prepare and deliver the pizza.
As an unexpected extra service to the children,
the club participated in the entertainment for
the evening, donning yellow chicken hats and gathering
on the stage for the “Chicken Dance.”
It was a wonderful community service project that
allowed Courthouse Rotary Club members to get
the rest of their families involved as well. As
you can imagine, when you see the campers laughing
and having a good time, you really don’t want
to leave.
